chapter twenty-one

PAGE SEVENTY-TWO AND Bella had made her way down the stairs. It was nearly noon. She seemed happy and peaceful, and her father was more than just a little relieved. He made her something to eat and then laid out her clothes while she sang loudly in the bathtub.

“You are actually getting clean in there, aren’t ya, Bell?”

She quit singing. He grinned at her answer of silence while finding her a pair of flowered sneakers and some pink socks that actually matched each other.

“Dad needs to go see a friend in the city, and we need some groceries. Anything you want to do?”

“Chocolate ice cream.”

“Besides that…”

“I want to ride the ponies at the park.”

“If they’re there today, we’ll swing by. I thought about taking you to a museum—we can go look at art. Would you like that?”

“Okay.”

He walked down the hall and stopped to listen at Sienna’s door. She was still typing away almost manically. He wrote her a note and put it on the floor.

Went to make sure Cheney is headed to rehab. We’ll be gettin’ some better food. Get some sleep. I love you.

Oh—all the doors are locked. I’ve got one of my buddies keeping an eye on the place ’till I get back. His name is Alex. He’s the big, ugly, excessively tattooed brute roamin’ around like a guard dog.

Did I say I love you? I do. More than anything else in the world.
